Sheffield Wednesday have extended the contract of their assistant manager Henrik Pedersen.
Sheffield Wednesday have extended the contract of their assistant manager Henrik Pedersen, while the future of another coach may well have been revealed too.
Among the sea of negative news stories coming out of Hillsborough, was the positive announcement that Owls assistant Pedersen had signed a new deal.
However, the same cannot be said for Chris Powell, with it appearing Wednesday's other assistant manager is set to leave the club this summer.
Pedersen said he did not hesitate to sign the contract extension offered to him by owner Dejphon Chansiri, who is at the centre of talks around takeovers and sales.
The Dane has joined the Owls' players at England training ground St. George's Park, where the blue and white side of Sheffield are being put through their pre-season paces.
The 47-year-old has been a part of Danny Rohl's coaching staff since 2023, having spent a varied career across Europe in coaching positions at teams like Red Bull Salzburg and Union Berlin.
While Pedersen will be staying at Hillsborough, as was expected, the story could progress further if Rohl's situation is resolved.
The former Germany national team assistant is in talks with the higher-ups at Wednesday to find a compromise which would also allow him to move on from the club, as the current stumbling block is believed to be a hefty compensation fee another team would have to pay if he was to leave the Owls.
Sheffield Star reporter Joe Crann replied to a post on X, and pointed out that Wednesday could not announce Pedersen as manager because currently Rohl remains in that position. That could indicate that he is indeed in line to succeed the sought-after German, as The Mirror wrote, with that presenting another boost for Owls fans.
While Pedersen signing a contract extension shows signs of life for the Owls ahead of the 2025/26 season, the news came with a tinge of disappointment soon after.
That was related to Wednesday assistant Chris Powell, who does not appear to be in the plans to remain at Hillsborough. The former Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town boss, who is a charismatic figure, is still headed for the exit with no switch-around incoming.
Sheffield Star's Joe Crann wrote on his X account that he had "not heard anything to suggest" Powell would remain in post.
He did caution that: "Obviously that doesn’t mean things can’t change, but there’s been no suggestion that he’ll be back at this point."
The former West Ham United defender managed 274 Premier League appearances and five England caps during his playing career, and has since built a strong coaching CV.
While the news of Pedersen's re-signing is a major positive for the upcoming Sky Bet Championship campaign, it comes as an oasis in the dessert of sorry Owls updates.
After successive failed payment of player wages by Chansiri, the club has been hit by transfer embargoes, with mismanagement dragging Wednesday down on their route to the 2025/26 season.
