Things are going from bad to worse for Sheffield Wednesday this summer
Sheffield Wednesday players are considering paying for their own hotel rooms ahead of their season opener against Birmingham City.
The bad news continues to roll on at Hillsborough this summer, with multiple Championship clubs interested in a move for club legend Barry Bannan and the fact that wages won’t be paid on time for the third consecutive month.
The Owls won’t be able to open their North Stand due to safety concerns and saw manager Danny Rohl depart earlier this week.
Football has taken a back step at Hillsborough this summer due to the ongoing controversies, but the Championship season is now rapidly approaching.
This means that some uncomfortable conversations have already begun about how matchday preparations will take place for their opener against Leicester City.
According to the Sheffield Star, Wednesday’s players are considering paying for their own hotel rooms ahead of their opening day trip to Leicester City after being told pre-match accommodation may not be provided by the club.
The Owls take on Marti Cifuentes’ side on August 10, but due to their financial woes, no plans have been made surrounding travel to the game.
It’s reported that the booking of any pre-match accommodation for the trip to Leicester is currently uncertain and that plans are being created by the club to make the 70-mile journey on the day of the game.
This has left players concerned about how this may affect their preparation for the clash, with many now thought to be considering driving down to Leicester the night before and subsequently paying for a hotel room themselves.
It appeared that the Owls may be edging towards some positivity when talks over a potential takeover seemed to be progressing, but just weeks later, the situation looks worse than ever at Hillsborough.
The reality of what Wednesday are about to embark on is grim, with some players now deciding that enough is enough.
After complications with wages for the fourth month in five, a number of the Steel City side’s crop are considering refusing to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Burnley to protest the current situation.
The Clarets have offered to pay for Wednesday’s accommodation to try and get the match on, but it is still yet to be seen whether that game will go ahead.
With no current signs of escaping this nightmare, the next few weeks will be extremely tough to tackle for everyone involved with the Owls.
