Portsmouth have been told that John Swift would be a good addition as they look to add Championship experience to their squad this summer.

The 29-year-old has spent the past three years at West Brom, but he is set to leave The Hawthorns at the end of the month as his contract expires.

Therefore, Swift is on the lookout for his next club, and it has been claimed that Portsmouth are among his suitors, along with clubs from America and Turkey.

John Swift is open to Portsmouth switch ahead of West Brom exit

Swift has a connection to the south coast side, as he was born in the city, and he started out in the academy before joining Chelsea.

As a result, it’s said that Swift would be keen on making the move to Fratton Park if a deal can be agreed.

And, when asked by FLW about the prospect of Swift pulling on the blue shirt, our resident Portsmouth fan pundit Milos Ioannidis explained that the ex-Reading man is exactly the sort of calibre of player that Pompey must target as they look to kick-on after a good first season back in the Championship.

We’ve had a handful of rumours so far, most of which feels like agent talk as they make minimal to no sense at all. I think this one is probably the most realistic, and the one I’d be content with.

We are after Championship experience, and that is what Swift would provide, from both Reading and West Brom. He’s been a consistent performer at this level, and there’s obviously a Pompey connection from when he was part of the academy.

I think as a club we should be all over this. Not just for the Pompey connection, but he is a Championship proven player in a position where we need depth. He can provide crucial competition for someone like Callum Lang, and he can play in different positions in attack, which opens up more options.

So, I would be pleased if this was true. He’s the type of player I like to see being linked to Pompey, and I hope we can sign him.”

John Swift has the quality to improve Portsmouth

Most would agree with the assessment that Swift would improve Pompey.

Whilst he was frustrating for Albion, Swift did show many moments of his ability, and it’s worth noting that he hit double figures for goal contributions in his first two years, before falling off somewhat last season.

Nevertheless, at 29, he still has a lot to offer, and you could easily see Swift becoming a key figure for John Mousinho’s side, which wasn’t always the case with the Baggies.
