Should Onana stay...or should he go?

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has endured a testing two seasons to date with the Red Devils and speculation continues to swirl regarding the Cameroon international's future at Old Trafford.

Recent reports have linked the 29-year-old stopper with a potential move to Ligue 1 side Monaco, although Onana reportedly wants to stay put and help United bounce back from a torrid campaign which saw them finish 15th in the Premier League and end the season on a low with a Europa League final loss to Tottenham.

Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim has made no secret of his desire to shake up his squad this summer, and given Onana's penchant for high-profile errors during his time in Manchester, the Portuguese manager has a decision to make regarding his number one.

Key Onana stats from last season (Premier League)

- Onana's save percentage last season of 69% placed him 13th among Premier League goalkeepers last season, the Cameroonian saving 88 of the 132 shots on target against him.

- Only five keepers kept more Premier League clean sheets last term than Onana's nine: David Raya, Matz Sels (both 13), Jordan Pickford (12), Dean Henderson (11), Ederson and Robert Sanchez (10).

- Onana saved one of the four penalty kicks he faced in the Premier League last term.

- According to the expected goals (xG) metric, Onana actually saved one goal more than the model would have predicted last season.

- His long pass completion percentage of 27% was one of the lowest in the top flight however.

- Onana's crosses stopped percentage was also inferior to many of his Premier League peers - the Red Devils keeper stopping 5.5% of the crosses pinged into his penalty area. In total, Onana made 22 high claims last season, ranking him joint-15th among Premier League goalkeepers.

- The former Ajax and Inter man is renowned for his distribution skills, yet his numbers clearly show that he is conservative in terms of where he receives the ball. While the likes of Ederson (17.5 yards) and David Raya (17.2 yards) received the ball near the edge of their box last term, Onana on average received the ball just 11.8 yards from his own net.

- Onana made four mistakes which led to an opponent's shot last season. We should add some extra context here to support the under-fire keeper, as the likes of Robert Sanchez (10) and David Raya (9) made considerably more errors of this type.

Playmaker's verdict

There is always a 'but' with Onana at the moment and Ruben Amorim must carefully weigh up the pros and cons of keeping him at Old Trafford this summer.

Although Onana has shown the ability to make impressive saves, occasionally at crucial times, he has also made his fair share of glaring mistakes. While he has not been helped by United's overall defensive fragility or Rasmus Hojlund's failure to establish himself as an effective target man, Onana's renowned distribution has often flattered to deceive - and his passing stats last season generally compared badly with other top flight goalkeepers.

Perhaps Amorim sees Onana's skill-set as something he can develop... or maybe the Portuguese manager wants to bring in a keeper of his own choosing. Our money would be on Onana staying at Manchester United this summer, but time will tell!
