Diego Simeone pushed back at Jan Oblak’s post-match criticism, insisting Atlético Madrid’s heavy defeat at Rayo Vallecano was about poor play, not intensity or attitude.
"I do not agree with what Oblak said, the team do not choose games, but we played badly. Rayo Vallecano were superior, we had no chances, it was not about intensity or desire," Simeone said, speaking to DAZN.
"I do not think it was intensity. Nor attitude. We played badly, they played better and that brought them more situations. We had no transitions or quality in the final pass. They were better," he added.
The former Benfica goalkeeper had said it felt as if they had thrown LaLiga away and that Atlético cannot lose games like this or perform in such a manner. He felt they were not competing at maximum level, warned it would be hard to compete like that, and said they deserved to lose.
This season Oblak, valued at 17 million euros, has played 31 matches for Atlético de Madrid, 23 in La Liga, seven in the Champions League and one in the Spanish Super Cup. The 33-year-old has conceded 37 goals in 2,790 minutes.
