Simón could make his 250th official appearance for Athletic on Sunday when Levante visit San Mamés. If he features, the 28-year-old would become the club’s fifth goalkeeper to reach that mark, after Iribar (614), Carmelo Cedrún (404), Iraizoz (392) and Lezama (263).
As reported by as.com, he joined Lezama at cadet level. He debuted unexpectedly on 20 August 2018 against Leganés, days after being recalled from a loan at Elche, then in Segunda.
Berizzo brought back the Murgia-born keeper three weeks after he had headed to Martínez Valero, with Arrizabalaga leaving for Chelsea, Herrerín injured and Remiro sidelined after declining a new deal.
After seven matches he was relegated to the bench by Herrerín’s recovery, returning only for four Copa ties that season. The following campaign he claimed the starting spot and has retained it in league play, fitness permitting.
He won the European Under-19 title in 2015 and the Under-21s in 2019. Luis Enrique called him up in August 2020 and he debuted in November against the Netherlands in a friendly.
Now Spain’s first-choice, Simón has 56 caps, a record for Athletic. He has played two European Championships, 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 World Cup, and has won the 2023 Nations League and Euro 2024, plus Olympic silver at Tokyo 2020.
