Legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has delivered news that will thrill supporters.

Greatest of all time

Appointed United manager in November 1986, Sir Alex went on to enjoy a glittering career in the dugout. He is widely regarded as the greatest coach not only in English football, but in the history of the sport.

Over his 26-year tenure until his retirement in 2013, he transformed United into the global powerhouse it is today.

He earned a reputation as a shrewd, no-nonsense manager whose man-management skills and ability to adapt and evolve with the game were simply unrivalled.

During the Scot’s 26-year tenure, United amassed 38 trophies, making him the club’s longest-serving and most decorated manager.

The key highlights of Sir Alex’s legendary tenure include ending the club’s 26-year wait for a league title in 1993 and securing an unprecedented treble in 1999 (the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League). In recognition of his services to football, he was knighted later that same year.

He led the Red Devils to 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups, 10 Community Shields, two Champions League trophies, one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, one UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

The club has struggled to recapture the glory of his spell since his retirement, a reality that serves to highlight the magnitude of his achievements even further.

On Monday, Sir Alex announced that he will reveal the 21 matches that mean the most to him in a new memoir, which will be published in October.

The book will also contain never-before-seen photographs and notebooks from his private archive.

The 84-year-old said in a statement, “I’ve selected 21 football games for this book which are particularly meaningful to me.”

“The choices may surprise you because, rather than dwelling on the matches I’ve written about previously or those that might immediately register in the minds of fans, I’ve chosen games that take me back to different points in my life and which, even after the decades have passed, count for so much.”

“Some of these games are not in any television archive. They are just memories. But, in my mind, I am watching them now – in vivid colour.”

The BBC points out that the book has been written with Sir Alex’s long-time friend, author and venture capitalist Sir Michael Moritz.

The fully illustrated memoir will be published in hardback, eBook, and audio on 8 October.
