Six things we've learned from Sunderland's pre-season campaign so far and what they mean for 2026/27 | OneFootball

Sunderland lost 4-2 to Liverpool in Nashville as their US tour continues. According to Sunderland Echo, they now head for New Jersey to meet Leeds United, with six early lessons for 2026/27.

Chris Rigg looks at home in central midfield, scoring at York then impressing alongside Enzo Le Fée against Liverpool. Stronger on the ball than last summer, the number-eight role suits him and, even with Xhaka, Diarra and Sadiki to return, he is pushing for minutes under Régis Le Bris.

Tom Proctor, the youngest tourist, has been a welcome surprise. He netted at York and offered a lively cameo in Nashville, pressing with intent and making smart runs. Physical growth will come, but his inclusion already looks justified and he has given coaches something to ponder.

Dan Ballard’s 45 minutes against Liverpool were a major boost after months out. Dependable and strong in the air, he remains pivotal despite competition from Alderete, Mukiele and O’Nien, and possibly another signing. The priority is building minutes carefully for a European schedule, with Mukiele also able to cover right-back.

Enzo Le Fée’s central influence has carried over, a big factor in last season’s strong finish. He keeps finding dangerous positions and has three in two already, with more chances missed. If he stays on penalties, he could push towards double figures.

A right winger is probably the key summer addition for consistent one-v-one threat, though Trai Hume remains a viable option after dovetailing with Nordi Mukiele to limit Rio Ngumoha in the first half. Reinildo has started solidly, yet cover on his flank looks a pressing need for Florent Ghisolfi.
