Steven Gerrard is once again at the centre of speculation, with Sky Sports reporting that Rangers are ready to open talks with the former Liverpool captain about a sensational return to Ibrox.
Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph has confirmed that discussions are expected to take place in the coming days.“Rangers are set to hold talks with Steven Gerrard this week about a potential return to Ibrox.”“The American owners are believed to be leading the search and Gerrard is one they are particularly keen on, among a number of candidates.”
Gerrard, now 45, has been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq by mutual consent in January. He previously stated on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast that offers have come his way, though none have yet convinced him to step back into management.
Gerrard’s reputation in Glasgow remains high following his spell between 2018 and 2021. Across three seasons, he restored Rangers as a competitive force in Scottish football, culminating in a landmark title win in 2020-21. That campaign delivered the club’s first Scottish Premiership crown since 2011, ending Celtic’s decade of supremacy.
Rangers went unbeaten across the league, collecting 102 points, conceding only 13 goals and keeping 26 clean sheets. It was one of the most dominant title wins in the club’s history and marked their 55th championship.
His time at Ibrox was defined by resilience, tactical discipline and a winning culture forged during his years at Liverpool. Supporters saw glimpses of the same drive that once inspired Champions League comebacks at Anfield now applied to the Scottish stage.
That success earned Gerrard his move to Aston Villa later in 2021, although that tenure lasted just 11 months during a turbulent period at Villa Park. Since then he has spoken candidly about selecting the right opportunity rather than rushing into the wrong one.
“There’s a part of me that still feels that there’s a bit of unfinished business in terms of wanting to go in and face another couple of exciting challenges,” he said. “But I want a certain type of challenge. If in an ideal world they come available, I’ll jump at them. If they don’t, I won’t go back in.”
Rangers are prepared to welcome him back but whether he accepts could depend on assurances around transfers, structure and control. Gerrard has evolved since his first spell, managing abroad and weathering setbacks. Returning to Ibrox would not be nostalgic, it would be a statement that he still intends to compete at the highest possible level.
Liverpool fans will be watching from afar. Many still view his managerial journey as part of a longer story. Another successful spell in Scotland could yet propel him back toward the Premier League in the future.
