Slegers on Russo’s leadership and Arsenal’s huge win over Spurs | OneFootball

Renee Slegers believes that Alessia Russo is driving her Arsenal team forward after their 5-2 win against Tottenham in the Women’s Super League.

The Lionesses striker scored a first-half hat-trick in a statement win for Arsenal, but Slegers says there is more to her game than just the goals.

“She is also part of the leadership group at Arsenal now,” Slegers explained. “She is always herself, wanting to bring her best version, and she is very humble. She is very lovely and respectful to anyone she works with or passes by.

“You can see that she’s stepping up. In training she is communicating more and instructing more, driving the team more by being more vocal. That’s really good I think. She’s definitely developing that and we love to see it.”

Slegers also assessed the teams performanced after the match.

I’m very happy with the win, of course,” she added. “We were really good in the first half in different moments. I was happy to get the early goals here at the Emirates Stadium with the support of our fans behind us. I wanted us to come out fast and we did that through Alessia [Russo]’s three goals. T

“he second half was more about management. They spent more time with the ball and that’s something that we want to look at, how we get more pressure on the ball.

“We managed it really well. I felt we were resilient throughout the whole game and we finished things off at 5-2, so I’m really happy with it. It was a short turnaround for us, with all the big games we’re playing, so to play this way and score five goals is very pleasing.”
