Federico Chiesa is not fit enough to make Liverpool’s squad for competitive games but coach Arne Slot admits his condition is gradually improving as he is expected to start training with the rest of the group soon.

The former Juventus winger only made three appearances since joining the Reds from Juventus in the summer, but he played his last game in late September, and Slot recently explained that the Italian is struggling to keep up with the ‘intensity levels’ of the rest of the Liverpool team.

Chiesa completely missed the pre-season with Juventus, which is why he’s struggling to reach the level of fitness required to be called up for games with regularity.

However, speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool’s away match to Arsenal in the Premier League, Slot commented on the condition of recent absentees Chiesa, Conor Bradley and Diogo Jota, suggesting the form of the Italian is on the rise.

“I think they feel good but not when it comes to playing for us during the weekend,” Slot told reporters.

“Federico might train with us today or tomorrow – but Diogo definitely not. And Conor Bradley, let’s see if he can be with us tomorrow.”

Chiesa’s only goal contribution for Liverpool came in their EFL Cup fixture against West Ham, when he delivered an assist in the Red’s 5-1 win, which also marked the only time he started a match since moving to Anfield.
