Galatasaray believed they had doubled their advantage when Osimhen finished from close range after a defensive error by Konate. However, the goal was ruled out following a VAR review that identified Baris Alper Yilmaz in an offside position during the build up.

Liverpool themselves then thought they had equalised. A chaotic goalmouth scramble ended with the ball crossing the line, only for VAR to intervene again. Konate was adjudged to have handled the ball before it went in, leaving the score unchanged after a lengthy review.

For all their attacking threat, Liverpool’s vulnerability from set pieces remains a concern. Lemina’s winner came from a situation that has repeatedly caused problems for Slot’s side throughout the season.

Osimhen’s initial header from Sara’s corner was delivered without sufficient pressure, allowing Galatasaray to exploit the second ball. Lemina’s reaction was instinctive and decisive, while Liverpool’s marking appeared hesitant.

Those defensive moments ultimately proved decisive.

Anfield Awaits in Champions League Decider

Liverpool supporters know Istanbul as a city tied forever to Champions League history, yet this visit produced very different emotions. The Reds have now failed to win in four away matches against Galatasaray, and they must now overturn a deficit to reach the quarter finals.

There were positives within the performance. Liverpool created opportunities, maintained attacking pressure, and remained within striking distance throughout a tense evening.

Hugo Ekitike nearly provided a memorable equaliser late on when he raced clear and attempted an audacious chipped finish, only for Cakir to stretch out a hand and produce a superb save.

The tie now moves to Anfield on 18 March, where Liverpool will expect a very different atmosphere and approach. A single goal deficit leaves the contest finely balanced, but the margin for error has narrowed considerably.

For Slot and his players, the task is simple in theory, yet demanding in practice. Liverpool must rediscover defensive control, sharpen their finishing, and deliver the European response their supporters expect.
