Southampton trio Shea Charles, Ryan Manning and Finn Azaz saw their World Cup qualifying bids end on Thursday, and their club returns are set to be delayed by further internationals.

According to Sainstmarching.com, the Republic of Ireland let a 2-0 lead slip against Czech Republic before losing on penalties, while Northern Ireland were beaten by Italy in a semi-final.

Ireland were in control until Manning fouled Ladislav Krejci, allowing Patrik Schick to convert from the spot. Krejci levelled late on to force extra time and a shootout.

In the shootout, Azaz saw his attempt saved from 12 yards, then Jan Kliment struck the decisive kick past Caoimhin Kelleher. Ireland play again on Tuesday, so Manning and Azaz are due back only a couple of days before the FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal.

Charles impressed for Northern Ireland against Italy, but his country again missed out on the World Cup, now 40 years without reaching the tournament.

Northern Ireland fielded a youthful side with an average age of 22.5. They also have another friendly, so Charles will not rejoin Southampton for a few days.

Saints boss Tonda Eckert will want the pair back in their recent club form. Daniel Peretz’s international period is over after a pre-planned half-time substitution for Israel, and Southampton face a significant fortnight against Arsenal, Wrexham and Derby.
