Southampton’s FA Cup quarter-final with Arsenal is an enticing distraction, but promotion remains the priority. According to Sainstmarching.com, academy winger Jay Robinson could be handed opportunities in the run-in as Tonda Eckert manages a heavy schedule.
The Saints last lost a Championship game in mid-January against Hull City. Since then they have been on a strong run and now have 17 league wins, holding the final play-off spot.
Recent victories over Coventry City, Norwich City and Oxford United came without Leo Scienza, who has six combined goals and assists in the Championship. Now fit for the quarter-final, his return would be a major boost and keeps alive the chance of a David v Goliath shock.
Scienza’s absence highlighted the need for depth, with Robinson potentially stepping in on the Brazilian’s preferred left flank. April brings seven matches in 24 days, so Eckert might turn to the 19-year-old to share the workload in attack.
London-born Robinson has missed the past two months with a quad problem. Before that he impressed in senior football, producing two goals and one assist in 25 Championship outings.
Eckert is unlikely to hesitate if he needs cover, given Robinson’s versatility across left wing, right wing and number ten, and his squad number 46. The winger trained in front of the St Mary’s crowd recently and could feature in that tie if required.
