Santos academy graduate Souza made his Tottenham debut away to Manchester United on Saturday, featuring in a 2-0 defeat.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the left-back became Tottenham’s youngest Brazilian to play in an official match at 19 years, seven months and 19 days, surpassing Sandro who debuted at 21.
Supporters in England praised his attitude and intensity on social media despite the result.
Tottenham agreed a €15 million fee with Santos. The Brazilian club held 75% of his rights and the remaining 25% belonged to the player, who waived his share to complete the move.
Before Spurs struck the deal, Souza had drawn interest from Barcelona and Bayern Munich, along with offers from the Netherlands and other European markets.
For Santos’ first team he made 39 appearances, scored one goal and provided four assists. Last season he played 30 matches with one goal and two assists, earning internal praise and moving onto the Brazil national team’s radar as Carlo Ancelotti’s staff watched games.
He broke into Santos’ senior side in 2024, first in the Campeonato Paulista then in Serie B of the Brasileiro, and did not return to the youth ranks. Born in Mauá in 2006, he joined the club aged nine after playing futsal for Juventus.
Initially a forward, he was converted to left-back during his development and also featured in midfield. He has been capped by Brazil at youth level and played at the Under-17 World Cup in 2023.
