Juventus’ UEFA Champions League league phase win over Benfica on matchday seven was overshadowed by a touchline clip of Luciano Spalletti appearing to slap Belgian forward Lois Openda as he prepared to come on.
According to Glorioso 1904, the incident happened in Turin on 70 minutes with the hosts 2-0 up, with television cameras catching the Italian coach swiping Openda while delivering instructions.
Footage shows the Belgium international laughing at the guidance, then Spalletti tapping him to get his attention. The clip has gone viral beyond Italy and drawn widespread criticism, though Openda’s reaction suggests it may have been taken as a joke.
Despite the victory, Spalletti was whistled during the match after player errors and addressed it afterwards. He said they want to play attractive football and be aligned with supporters. A high block invites counter-attacks, players must handle it, and fan frustration at wayward passes is normal.
Juventus, already assured of a Champions League play-off place, visit Monaco in the final round. Benfica host record winners Real Madrid at Estádio da Luz on Wednesday 28 at 20:00.
