Sporting Lisbon are at risk of being hit with a partial stadium closure after fireworks were set off during their match with Arsenal.

Fireworks were set off behind Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya’s goal during the first-half of Arsenal’s 5-1 win at the Jose Alvalade Stadium on Tuesday night.

UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will assess reports from the game over the coming days, but Sporting face being charged for the incident.

Under Article 16(2)(c) of UEFA’s Disciplinary Regulations, clubs can be charged if their supporters light fireworks or other objects in the stadium.

Sporting were punished by UEFA last week after fireworks were set off during their 4-1 victory over Manchester City earlier this month.

The club were fined €25,000 (£20,800) and hit with a partial stadium closure of sector A14 of the Jose Alvalade Stadium. The stadium closure, however, was suspended during a probationary period of two years.

Sporting will await the verdict of the UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, but they could now be hit with a partial stadium closure if they are charged with the lighting of fireworks during this probationary period.

UEFA treat the use of pyrotechnics at stadiums seriously and have a string of measures in place to punish clubs.

For the first offence, sides are fined €500 (£417) per firework lit. The second offence uses the same calculation but the fine is also increased by 50 per cent. Further breaches sees an additional €250 (£208) fine for each offence from the third one onwards.

In UEFA’s latest round of disciplinary decisions from the Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, which was published last week, they handed out €145,000 (£121,000) of fines to clubs for the use of fireworks by fans.
