Tottenham Enter £100m Sandro Tonali Race as Newcastle Brace for Bids

Spurs Join Arsenal and Man City in Transfer Battle

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer plans have taken on a distinctly ambitious shape, with The Telegraph reporting that Spurs have been encouraged to join Arsenal and Manchester City in the race for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.

The 26-year-old Italian is expected to command a fee of around £100m, a figure that immediately changes the temperature of any negotiation. This is not a speculative punt. This is a deal that would require conviction, structure and, perhaps most importantly, a clear idea of what Tottenham want to become under Roberto De Zerbi.

Spurs’ interest is said to be genuine, driven by De Zerbi, although Arsenal and City had previously been viewed as the more desirable destinations by Tonali’s representatives. That detail matters. It suggests Tottenham may have work to do, not only with Newcastle, but with the player’s camp too.

Newcastle Hold Firm on £100m Valuation

Newcastle are reportedly calm about the situation. Tonali is under contract until 2029, with the club holding an option to extend by another year, which gives them leverage.

After the difficult Alexander Isak saga last year, when the striker eventually joined Liverpool for a British record £128m after refusing to train or play, Newcastle appear determined to avoid another messy exit. This time, the message seems simple, meet the price or move on.

That stance is understandable. Tonali was signed from AC Milan for £55m in 2023, but his time on Tyneside has carried unusual complexity. He served a 10-month ban for breaching gambling rules shortly after arriving in England, during which Newcastle stood by him and extended his contract.

For supporters, that history colours everything.

Arsenal Seen as Favourites Despite Spurs Interest

Internally, Newcastle have reportedly viewed Arsenal as favourites since Tonali was first linked with the Emirates in January. Manchester City have also been kept informed, although their priority appears to be Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have stepped away due to the combined cost of the transfer fee and wage demands.

Spurs’ arrival in the race may therefore serve more than one purpose. It may be a genuine expression of interest, but it may also accelerate movement elsewhere. In transfer windows, rival interest often works as theatre, leverage and warning.

For Tottenham, though, the attraction is obvious. Tonali offers control, bite, tempo and Champions League pedigree. He is a midfielder who can shape games rather than merely survive them.

Tonali Decision Could Define Spurs Ambition

The question for Spurs is whether this is the right £100m statement.

De Zerbi would surely relish a midfielder with Tonali’s technical range and intensity. Tottenham have lacked that commanding central presence, the player capable of making possession feel purposeful rather than decorative.

Yet there is also risk. Tonali would arrive with emotional baggage, a huge price tag and doubts about whether Spurs can offer the same immediate platform as Arsenal or Manchester City.

Still, ambitious clubs sometimes need to enter difficult rooms. If Tottenham want to be taken seriously again, deals like this are the price of admission.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Spurs fan’s perspective, this is exactly the sort of story that creates excitement and caution in equal measure.

On one hand, Sandro Tonali would feel like a proper statement signing. Not a hopeful project, not a bargain market opportunity, but a player with genuine status. If Roberto De Zerbi wants him, that carries weight. He knows Italian football, understands midfield structures and will surely recognise what Tonali could bring to a Spurs side that has too often lacked authority in the middle of the pitch.

But £100m is a serious figure. Tottenham cannot afford another marquee signing who looks better in theory than in reality. For that money, Tonali would need to transform the team’s rhythm almost immediately.

There is also the uncomfortable question of destination. If Arsenal and Manchester City are both circling, Spurs need to ask whether they are leading this race or being used to move it along. That does not mean they should walk away, but it does mean they need clarity.

For supporters, the appeal is obvious. Tonali would make Spurs feel bigger, sharper and more serious. But this deal only makes sense if it is part of a wider plan, not simply a headline to win June.
