Spurs Seek Continuation of Dominance over Man Utd

Tottenham will look to make it five wins in a row against Manchester United as they face Ruben Amorim’s side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend.

Last season the two sides faced each other four times in all competitions with Spurs coming out on top on every occasion. The most notable of those matches was the Europa League final which was settled by a Brennan Johnson winning goal in Bilbao.

However, Manchester United have been in a good run of form as of late winning three of their last four matches on a rare undefeated spell in the Premier League. They will be hoping to get revenge on the north London side.

Spurs’s poor home form

Despite being very good on the road, Tottenham’s home form has been very poor so far this Premier League campaign. Thomas Frank’s men have won only once at Hotspur Stadium in five fixtures, against Burnley. Three losses and a draw were the other results.

Their European record is better, having won both of their home Champions League matches so far, including a 4-0 win over FK København on Wednesday.

The team were booed off in their last home fixture against Chelsea after losing 1-0 and only creating 0.1 expected goals (xG) from three shots throughout the match.

Frank said that he understood why the Spurs fans were booing after the match. “The fans did everything they could to back us in a game that we didn’t perform well in,” he said. “Chelsea were better than us on the day. There’s no doubt, and I keep saying it, that we have a front four that is new. We have to build together with short turnarounds in games. We’ll do that. I’m not in doubt that will happen.”

All this is in stark contrast to Spurs’ away form where they have been one of the best performers in the league on the road winning four of their five matches away from home.

Manchester United’s return to form

Amorim’s men started the season poorly, only winning two matches in all competitions before October. Since then, however, their four-match unbeaten run includes a significant 2-1 win away at Anfield against Liverpool.

The Portuguese manager talked ahead of his trip to north London, about the difference in his side now from the beginning of the season.

“I think we are more confident. We believe more that we can win any game and we prove already that we can win any game. The last game against Nottingham Forest was tough on us because in some moments we weren’t the team we were supposed to be in every minute. And compare that against Brighton, it was a different thing.”

Despite the improvements, Amorim still believes there is a long way to go for his side this season.

“We cannot forget we have a lot to improve. We are more prepared for anything to happen in a game. But we also know that we have a lot to do and improve to win more of these kind of games and consistently win. We are capable and confident but sometimes struggle in games that we need to do better.”

Whether it is Spurs continuing their dominance over Manchester United, or Amorim’s side finally getting the better of the north London side there will be pressure on the losing manager going into the international break.
