St. Pauli are languishing in 17th spot and four points adrift from the relegation place after mustering just 14 points from their 20 league matches this term. As a result, their two-season stay in the top flight is under real threat, especially as they have failed to win any of their last six league games since beating Heidenheim 2-1 in December. They gave up a narrow lead in last Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Augsburg, before they were comfortably beaten by Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals in midweek.
Martin Terrier, Patrik Schick and Jonas Hofmann all found the net to condemn St. Pauli to a 3-0 defeat at the BayArena, ending their hopes of winning the Pokal for the first time in their history. The result also represented the club’s fourth consecutive away defeat in all competitions, so they will be keen to return home for Saturday’s Bundesliga fixture.
St. Pauli have avoided defeat in each of their last three outings at Millerntor since losing 1-0 to Union on November 23. However, they have not beaten Stuttgart on home turf since claiming a 2-1 victory in November 1996.
Ricky-Jade Jones will be out for a significant period after sustaining an ankle injury in the cup defeat to Leverkusen. The hosts are also without David Nemeth, Simon Spari, Andréas Hountondji and Connor Metcalfe. Meanwhile, there are doubts surrounding the availability of Hauke Wahl and Eric Smith.
Predicted lineup: Vasij; Ando, Sands, Mets; Saliakas, Rasmussen, Fujita, Pyrka; Sinani, Pereira Lage; Kaars
In contrast to their hosts, Stuttgart will head into Saturday’s contest in high spirits after putting together a four-game winning run in all competitions. They recorded Bundesliga wins against Borussia Mönchengladbach and Freiburg, either side of a 3-2 victory against Young Boys in the Europa League, before they thrashed Holstein Kiel in Wednesday’s Pokal quarter-finals.
Deniz Undav, Chris Führich and Atakan Karazor all found the net in a 3-0 away success against their second-tier opponents, leaving them just two wins away from retaining the trophy they won last season. After booking a semi-final spot, Stuttgart will now turn their focus back to league action, with Sebastian Hoeneß’s side sitting in fourth spot in the Bundesliga table, boasting a three-point cushion to RB Leipzig in fifth place.
They have enjoyed success in recent road trips, having won their last three Bundesliga away games by a combined 11-1 scoreline. Die Schwaben have also won four of their previous five away meetings with St. Pauli.
Stuttgart are unable to call upon the services of Dan-Axel Zagadou, Lazar Jovanović and Tiago Tomás.
Predicted lineup: Nübel; Assignon, Jeltsch, Chabot, Mittelstädt; Karazor, Stiller; El Khannouss, Undav, Leweling; Demirović
