James Beadle turned the game in the 38th minute with a flying save, setting up Birmingham City's 2-0 win at Oxford United.
That first half stop set the tone. He then got down smartly to parry Stanley Mills's low drive (41.), keeping Birmingham in front at the break and calming a busy spell.
After the restart he stayed sharp under pressure, denying Ole Romenij from close range (88.). He capped it with another take in the first minute of second half stoppage time as Oxford United pushed late.
Beadle finished with four saves, including three from inside the box, plus two high claims. His distribution helped Birmingham play out, completing 27 of 45 passes and taking 61 touches to steady play when needed.
With that authority behind them, Birmingham can look ahead with confidence. Birmingham host Leicester City next in the Championship. Oxford United visit Sheffield United first.
