Steven Gerrard has hailed Arsenal’s Declan Rice as one of the best players in the world, and admits that he wishes Liverpool had signed the 27-year-old.

Rice scored the decisive goal in the Gunners’ 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The former West Ham captain has slotted in seamlessly to Mikel Arteta’s engine room since his £100million arrival back in 2023.

On TNT Sports ahead of Liverpool’s 4-0 victory against Galatasaray, Gerrard revealed his admiration for the England international.

"He's going from strength to strength," Gerrard said,

"I think he's one of the best in the world.

“It was a fantastic move for him. I wish we [Liverpool] signed him, actually.

"His confidence with playing well for England and being around that group of players, he's just gone to the next level now at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta.

"Fantastic coaching from him and he's up there now in the shout to be one of the world's best in that position and in that role."

Rice has played all but one of Arsenal’s 31 Premier League games this term, with the Gunners nine points clear at the summit.

He has scored four times and assisted five in that time, adding another goal and two assists from the Champions League into that tally.

Arsenal take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final this weekend before an FA Cup quarter-final at Southampton.

They return to league action on April 11 against Bournemouth after their trip to Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their Champions League last-eight tie.
