Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo produced another top performance despite the team being held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by West Ham.
United headed into the game with West Ham full of confidence, having won four games on the bounce.
In any case, a trip to West Ham was always going to be a tricky contest and this proved true as United quickly found themselves frustrated by the home side’s disciplined and compact low block.
Michael Carrick’s men were uncharacteristically underwhelming on the ball and struggled to create clear-cut goalscoring opportunities.
Things went from bad to worse when the Hammers took the lead moments after the break through Tomas Soucek. Buoyed by the advantage, West Ham retreated even further back as they seemed comfortable to let United have the ball and try to break them down.
United seemed set for a first defeat under Carrick until substitute Benjamin Sesko scored with a brilliant touch in stoppage time, ensuring the spoils were shared at the London Stadium.
Amid a largely anonymous team performance, Mainoo was a notable exception, continuing the exceptional form he has shown since the departure of Ruben Amorim.
Amid a frenetic, action-packed battle in midfield, Mainoo was the primary source of calm and composure for United in that area of the pitch.
He thought he had created the equaliser for United in the second half when he delivered a stunning ball to Casemiro, who headed home, but the goal was ruled out due to a very close offside call.
Mainoo was solid defensively, making one interception and eight recoveries. He delved into eight ground duels, winning four of them. He won the single aerial challenge that he vied for.
The England international touched the ball 82 times and made 30 carries, one of which was a progressive one.
As usual, the Carrington academy graduate’s numbers on the ball were outstanding. He successfully found a United teammate with 61 of the 66 passes he attempted (92% pass accuracy).
Unfortunately for Mainoo, his heroics were not enough to secure victory for United, though he can take heart from an excellent performance under difficult circumstances.
