Girona continues clinging to life. When Vallecas was already celebrating a victory that seemed definitive for Rayo, Cristhian Stuani appeared once again to rescue a golden point (1-1) in added time and keep Míchel's team alive in the fight for survival.
The Girona team played a sluggish match, with few chances and many difficulties in creating real danger, but they managed to resist and not collapse after the blow of Alemao's goal in the 86th minute. The Brazilian forward deflected a long-range shot from Unai López and beat Gazzaniga with a move that seemed to condemn Girona to a very painful defeat.
But this Girona team has been living on the edge for weeks, and in this scenario, Stuani always emerges. The veteran Uruguayan forward, who had entered just a few minutes earlier, headed in a cross from Tsygankov from the corner in the 90th minute to silence Vallecas and secure a vital point.
The first half was marked by tension and caution. Rayo had more initiative and forced Gazzaniga to make some good saves, especially against Camello, while Girona only truly threatened with a move by Joel Roca, who failed to finish after getting past Batalla. Míchel's team, with many offensive absences and without a fully fit target forward, once again showed the difficulties they have been facing in scoring goals for months.
In the second half, Girona stepped up and had a few minutes of dominance. Tsygankov warned with a high shot, and the referee even awarded a penalty to the red-and-whites for a handball by Óscar Valentín, but VAR correctly overturned the decision.
When the match seemed destined for a 0-0 draw, the crazy final moments arrived. First, Alemao put Rayo ahead, and then Stuani, once again, played the hero.
The draw gives Girona a bit more breathing room and, above all, the feeling that the team is still competing despite all the difficulties. It wasn't a great match for Míchel's side, but it was a demonstration of emotional resilience. And as long as Stuani is around, Girona will keep believing.
