Striker Mehdi Taremi joined Inter Milan on a free transfer last summer.

The Iranian international arrived from Porto after his contract with the Portuguese club had run out.

There were big expectations around Taremi’s arrival.

The 32-year-old had scored prolifically across his time in the Portuguese top flight. Moreover, he had also established himself as a regular in the Champions League.

Therefore, Inter had hoped that Taremi could provide not just a backup for Lautaro Martinez, but also rival them for the starting spot.

It would be fair to say that Mehdi Taremi has not lived up to those lofty expectations at Inter Milan.

The 32-year-old has dealt with his share of injuries and physical problems.

And this has meant that Taremi has never really been able to push for a starting spot at Inter. He has scored just three goals for the club to date.

The upshot is that Taremi has scored just three goals for Inter.

This is a nearly shocking return for a player with the Iranian’s reputation prior to joining.

Therefore, after a string of mediocre displays, it seemed inevitable. Inter would look to move Taremi on after just one season.

However, Taremi’s time at the San Siro may not be up after all.

The 32-year-old has still had a role to play in the season run-in.

Most notably, Taremi came on in both legs of Inter’s Champions League semifinal tie against Barcelona. He replaced injured captain Lautaro Martinez.

Taremi may not have scored in either match. But there was no question about his impact, as he physically competed with the Barcelona backline and offered the team an outlet up the pitch.

Taremi also assisted the all-important extra time winner in the second leg of the tie.

Moreover, Taremi won praise for his intense defensive efforts against Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal.

Furthermore, the Iranian international also impressed with his performance against Torino last weekend. And he is expected to start against Lazio this Sunday.

Therefore, reports Tuttosport, it may be the case that Taremi has rewritten the script.
