Summerville's extra-time strike sees West Ham defeat Burton Albion | OneFootball

West Ham United needed extra-time to defeat third-tier Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium with substitute Crys Summerville netting the winner.

For much of the first half in Staffordshire you'd be forgiven for not knowing which side was from the Premier League.

Nuno Espírito Santo had rotated to take on League One opposition but the game was very much played to the Brewers' liking.

Indeed, the home side were appealing for a penalty early on in the game when Kostas Mavropanos bundled into the back of Jake Beesley. Nothing was given but it very much fell into the realm of 'seen them given'.

At the other end Callum Wilson had the Irons only real effort with his curling shot easy enough for Bradley Collins to deal with.

West Ham were improved in the second half, seeing far more of the ball while Burton only getting the occasional chance on the break. Yet despite late introductions of Taty Castellanos and Crys Summerville, Burton held firm without conceding any major chances and forcing the game into extra-time.

The quality from the bench eventually told early in the second half when Summerville, who really has found his scoring boots lately, cut in from the right and fired an effort that took a deflection before hitting the net. That was the forward's sixth goal of the season, all of which have been scored in his last seven games.

While that goal was likely to make Burton heads drop they were given a way back into the game shortly afterwards when Freddie Potts lunged in from behind on Julian Larsson leading to a straight red card.

It was all Burton from that point on and the League One side found themselves in great positions but unable to really worry Alphonse Aréola. Meanwhile at the other end, Castellanos and Summerville were the only two outlets with the latter missing the chance to wrap up the game after winning the ball back on the edge of the Burton area.

Kyran Lofthouse came closest for Burton in the final stages of the match after some nice build-up play before he dragged his shot agonisingly wide of the post.

The Hammers have been in resurgent form lately but this a poor performance but one that Burton will take a lot of heart from.
