Reports that Sunderland have sealed a deal for Lucas Bergvall are being downplayed, with no agreement understood to be in place.
Football Insider had claimed Sunderland submitted an offer before striking an agreement, with Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest also linked. That depiction does not reflect the current state of Sunderland’s transfer business.
Bergvall would be a highly ambitious target for Régis Le Bris’ side. The 20-year-old is rated at around £50million and Tottenham are likely to seek the strongest terms given his age and profile. He joined Spurs from Djurgården in 2024 and later signed a long-term deal through to 2031, leaving the London club in a robust negotiating position.
Comfortable across central midfield, Bergvall is regarded as one of Sweden’s standout prospects. His age, technical level and potential resale value would appear to align with Sunderland’s recruitment model, and the club are expected to add further quality before the summer window closes.
Thomas Meunier remains the only senior arrival at present. Sporting director Florent Ghisolfi has already signalled a more measured approach after last summer’s extensive overhaul, with focus on making the right additions.
