Sunderland and Leeds United’s pursuit of Sevilla attacker Ruben Vargas has been dealt a blow, with a January move now in doubt after an injury last weekend.
Diario de Sevilla reports that the Swiss international returned from a hamstring lay-off in the 1-0 defeat to Celta Vigo, then suffered a fresh problem, damaging his left femoral biceps. The report adds that a mid-season exit now looks very unlikely.
The 27-year-old has been linked with both newly promoted clubs in recent weeks, alongside Bournemouth, who are understood to be seeking a replacement for Antoine Semenyo following his big-money move to Manchester City earlier this month.
Vargas joined Sevilla from Augsburg last January. He has five goals and five assists in 25 appearances, with three goals and four assists coming in 13 La Liga matches this season.
It had been thought Sevilla could cash in this winter to balance the books, but any sale now appears unlikely in light of his latest setback.
