In a recent report, Media Foot stated that Sunderland are close to signing Olympique Marseille midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia this summer. It has been mentioned that the Black Cats are eyeing a move to bring the Central African Republic international to the Stadium of Light this off-season.

Kondogbia’s Important Role At Marseille

Kondogbia has served as a useful squad player at the French club in this campaign after putting in a few solid performances for them in Ligue 1. The 33-year-old has featured in 17 matches for Marseille this season, securing one assist in the process across various competitions.

The Central African Republic talent is currently one of the most experienced midfielders in Ligue 1. Hence, the Black Cats would do well to snap him up in this summer transfer window.

His current contract at Marseille will run out at the end of next season, which could open the door for Sunderland to sign him on the cheap this summer.

Should Sunderland Boss Regis Le Bris Go For Kondogbia?

Kondogbia is a good tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his side inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and is an accurate passer as well. Kondogbia can even create the odd chance for his teammates to find the back of the net.

The Marseille sensation is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a centre-back or as a box-to-box midfielder if told to do so. However, there are some question marks over whether he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League if the Black Cats manage to get a deal done for him this off-season.

We can expect Kondogbia to add more bite and steel to Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris’ midfield. He is good enough to serve as a good rotational piece in the Wearside club’s squad.

At 33, Kondogbia might still have a few good years left in him to play at his best. Hence, it makes sense for Le Bris to go for a player of his experience and skill set in this upcoming transfer window.
