Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka moved to allay fitness fears after going off at half-time in Switzerland’s 4-3 defeat to Germany, with the switch agreed in advance, according to Sunderland Echo.

The 33-year-old recently missed five matches for his club with an ankle problem, then returned to start Sunderland’s last two outings, including the 2-1 win at Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Xhaka also began against the four-time world champions and said it was for others to judge how his absence affected the team, calling it a test against a very strong opponent and highlighting Germany’s composure under pressure.

He admitted Switzerland’s wastefulness in possession has rarely been punished in recent months, but at this level it is different and such lapses can decide a game.

Head coach Murat Yakin had already said he was in close contact with Xhaka, was not worried and that they would agree his minutes. After the loss, he noted Switzerland have not faced a side like Germany for almost two years, which limited their usual game.
