Sunderland condemned racist abuse aimed at Lutsharel Geertruida during the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park, saying there must be zero tolerance. The club offered full backing to the defender and called for those responsible to be identified and held to account.
The incident prompted a brief stoppage in the second half. Referee Anthony Taylor spoke to players and staff from both sides before play resumed.
In a statement, Sunderland said they were aware of the reported abuse and praised Geertruida for showing leadership by reporting it to match officials. They described racism as abhorrent and without place in football or society, acknowledged Newcastle's response, and said they expect accountability. The club added that the game must be safe and inclusive for everyone and that they will continue working with the relevant authorities.
Newcastle said they were aware of a report of racism made by a visiting player against someone in the crowd during their Premier League match against Sunderland. The club reiterated that discrimination of any kind is not tolerated and said they would work with the authorities to investigate fully and ensure any individuals are identified and held accountable.
The Premier League said a full investigation is under way and offered support to the player and both clubs. It reiterated that racism has no place and said it would keep working with stakeholders and authorities to ensure stadiums are inclusive and welcoming for all.
