Adil Aouchiche has left Sunderland for Bundesliga two side Schalke on a permanent deal, a move that could help unlock a deal for Ecuador international Nilson Angulo.
Aouchiche had been a key part of a complicated deadline-day chain, having previously occupied one of Sunderland’s six international loan slots while at Aberdeen.
His exit means Simon Adingra’s initial loan to Ligue one side Monaco can progress. Adingra is expected to move until the end of the campaign, with Sunderland banking an initial seven-figure loan fee. Monaco would hold an option to buy in the summer for around £15 million, which, if exercised, would see Sunderland recoup most of their original outlay.
If Adingra does depart, Sunderland will then look to conclude a deal for Anderlecht winger Angulo. An initial £15 million fee has been agreed, and the Ecuador international would take Adingra’s place in the squad. It was unclear at seven pm whether the paperwork beat the deadline, though clubs can secure an extra hour by filing a deal sheet in time.
Kristjaan Speakman said loan moves can help in the short term, but the club felt Aouchiche needed a longer-term project. He praised the midfielder’s qualities and work ethic, described Schalke as prestigious, and thanked him for his contribution while wishing him well.
