Sunderland are awaiting an update on the fitness of key defender Dan Ballard ahead of Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at arch rivals Newcastle United, according to Sunderland Echo.
The former Arsenal centre-back has been integral over the last 12 months, producing standout displays against Premier League forwards. Earlier this month he was named North East Football Writers’ Player of the Year and received the award at Ramside Hall.
The build-up to that ceremony followed confirmation of a new long-term deal at the Stadium of Light, which quelled talk of a move away. Director of football Florent Ghisolfi praised Ballard’s professionalism, consistency and spirit, calling him a Premier League defender and a leader who fits Sunderland’s identity and ambition.
Attention now turns to the wider squad, with several contracts approaching decision points. As it stands, nine players are out of contract this summer, some with options to extend. A further seven enter the final 12 months, creating the risk of cut-price departures.
Across the squad, deals are staggered through summers 2026, 2027, 2028 and 2029, while a group, including Ballard, are tied to 2030. Several players are currently out on loan and some agreements include options, pointing to a busy close season on Wearside.
