Sunderland have dismissed reports they opened talks over a £40 million move for AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun after claims emerged on Monday.
Sunderland Echo understands that club sources have firmly denied any discussions and say no active talks are under way.
Régis Le Bris and the recruitment team are assessing multiple targets as they shape the squad for the new campaign. Balogun is not currently the subject of negotiations, and the mooted fee would have been among the biggest in the club’s history, inevitably drawing attention from supporters.
As things stand there is no substance to suggestions of £40 million talks. Sunderland expect to stay active before the deadline as they prepare for the added demands of European football.
The club have shown a readiness to invest when the right player and deal align, but the latest Balogun speculation has been firmly distanced from. While the forward has featured in broader discussions around attacking options elsewhere, there has been no contact or negotiation from Sunderland’s side.
