The Sun reports that Sunderland are in talks with former Portugal international Jose Fonte about joining Régis Le Bris’ coaching staff.
Discussions are understood to be ongoing and progressing, although nothing has been finalised. If agreed, he would join the first-team set-up.
The 42-year-old retired in May after 882 senior appearances and a Euro 2016 win with Portugal. His arrival would bring significant Premier League and international experience to the Stadium of Light as Sunderland prepare for the demands of domestic and European football.
Le Bris’ squad reported back for pre-season at the Academy of Light on Thursday, and Fonte was not present while talks continue. In England he is best known for seven years at Southampton during the club’s climb from League One to the Premier League.
He joined Southampton from Crystal Palace in 2010 and made almost 300 appearances for the Saints. He also had a spell with West Ham.
Fonte is ready to begin a coaching career and Sunderland are exploring whether a deal can be struck. No appointment has been confirmed.
