A Sunderland supporter has arrived in Boston with his family for England’s World Cup fixtures and says soaring ticket prices are overshadowing the trip.

According to Sunderland Echo, Gareth Brazier, 49, who will watch Tuesday’s match against Ghana and England’s final group game with Panama, described prices as crazy.

England lead Group L from Ghana on goal difference after their 4-2 win over Croatia in Dallas, with Ghana next up in Boston.

He said he booked flights expecting cheaper seats because of high caps in the England away group, only to find the costs were insane. He added he would not have travelled on principle had the flights not already been paid for, and that saving for ages was necessary as his wife and three children also go.

Many England fans have arrived without tickets and hope prices will drop before kick-off. Karl Wall, 54, from Whitby, said he and a friend are waiting after abandoning tickets in an online basket due to the cost, while Lee Finegan, 53, from Middlesbrough, put prices at about £1,400. Mr Wall said they will try to find cheaper seats, otherwise they will head to the fan park.

Brazier joked that locals were saying England followers looked better and had better personal hygiene after the Scots left Boston following their opening two games.
