Sunderland’s recruitment drive has left them sixth in the Premier League’s 2025/26 net spend table at €155.59m ahead of a home meeting with Nottingham Forest. According to Sunderland Echo, only Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United have higher outlays.
The Black Cats were edged 4-3 by Aston Villa on Sunday, yet they are 11th, four points off sixth with a game in hand. Champions League qualification may still be possible, depending on the Europa League outcome.
A busy year brought Granit Xhaka, Robin Roefs, Nordi Mukiele and others through the door. Summer sales of Jobe Bellingham to Dortmund and Tom Watson to Brighton helped soften the balance sheet.
Forest, their next opponents, rank eighth with a €111.43m net spend, while Newcastle are 10th on €102.85m.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is Tottenham’s position. They are two points adrift in the relegation zone with five games left, and are now favourites to go down, despite winning the Europa League last season.
Chelsea’s modest €4.90m net spend reflects heavy buys, including Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro, offset by major exits such as Christopher Nkunku, Lesley Ugochukwu and Joao Felix.
Elsewhere, several clubs posted net income, with Bournemouth at €130.31m, Wolverhampton Wanderers at €81.10m, Brighton at €63.15m and Brentford at €50.06m.
