Sunderland have sold a majority stake in their women’s team to US multi-club ownership group Bay Collective, which is backed by investment firm Sixth Street. Sunderland will be its second club alongside Bay FC. According to Sunderland Echo, the agreement is subject to approval from the relevant football authorities and follows almost a year of negotiations.
Sunderland will retain a minority stake to ensure continuity with identity, values and intellectual property. The women’s team will be run in partnership with the wider club and continue to operate from the Academy of Light.
Interim CEO Tom Burwell called it a significant step and said the partnership reflects a shared ambition for Sunderland Women to thrive at the highest level.
Burwell said several options were assessed over the past year, but Bay Collective stood out for its global expertise and long-term approach. He added that the deal is part of Sunderland AFC’s global investment plan and will fund upgrades at the Academy of Light for women’s, men’s and Academy teams.
Bay Collective chief executive Kay Cossington said the group is committed to honouring Sunderland Women’s DNA and supporting players, staff and the Academy with tailored resources, infrastructure and training. She said it is a long-term partnership aiming to deepen links with fans and partners and build a platform for sustained success.
Sunderland are eighth in the WSL 2 table with two games left, and the investment is viewed as important to closing the gap to the top and their Super League ambitions.
