Régis Le Bris has made one change for Manchester United, recalling Lutsharel Geertruida. With Dan Ballard starting a three-game ban for violent conduct at Wolves last weekend, Nordi Mukiele moves to centre-back and Trai Hume stays on the right of midfield.
According to Sunderland Echo, Nilson Angulo is fit enough for the bench, while Bertrand Traore will not be risked at this stage.
Le Bris said on Thursday that Geertruida remained in contention despite uncertainty over his long-term future. He framed selection around short-term priorities to win this game and stressed the defender is fully committed for now. He also highlighted Geertruida’s versatility across midfield, full-back and left-sided centre-back amid strong competition for places.
Sunderland XI: Roefs, Geertruida, Mukiele, Alderete, Reinildo, Xhaka, Sadiki, Hume, Le Fée, Talbi, Brobbey. Subs: Ellborg, O'Nien, Mayenda, Isidor, Rigg, Angulo, Cirkin, Ta Bi, Diarra.
Manchester United are without Benjamin Šeško due to a shin injury. Amad starts on his first Stadium of Light appearance since his 2022/23 loan, with Joshua Zirkzee also coming in. Le Bris said he will be cautious with wingers returning from long layoffs and is not rushing any of them to start.
