Southampton’s move for Anthony Patterson could gain traction after a fresh twist over the Sunderland goalkeeper’s future. Fans, long concerned by Gavin Bazunu’s form, would welcome a January addition.
According to Sainstmarching.com, Sunderland are leaning away from a loan and would prefer a permanent sale. QPR and Leicester are also in the frame, with all three initially favouring a loan.
All three remain in the promotion hunt heading into 2026, though Southampton may have the edge. QPR’s resources are limited, while Leicester face financial concerns and a possible points deduction.
Of the trio, only Southampton are said to be able to fund an outright purchase, though it would leave them with four goalkeepers. Patterson could cost about £12 million, with wages upwards of £20,000 per week.
Aaron Ramsdale is on loan at Newcastle United and may be unlikely to return. His sale could more than cover Patterson’s fee, with Newcastle covering his wages and Southampton unlikely to want a £100,000-plus weekly bill if they stay in the Championship. Southampton therefore appear well placed to dictate terms if they move for Patterson.
