Sunderland will aim to extend their strong league record against Newcastle United when the latest Tyne-Wear derby takes place at St James Park on Sunday.

According to Sunderland Echo, Regis Le Bris and his players have impressed on their Premier League return with standout displays against Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.

April 2015: Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle United, settled by a spectacular moment just before half-time. Steven Fletcher nodded into Jermaine Defoe’s path and the striker’s volley secured the points for Dick Advocaat’s side.

October 2015: Sunderland 3-0 Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light. Fabricio Coloccini was sent off for a foul on Fletcher moments before the break, Adam Johnson converted the penalty, and second-half goals from Billy Jones and Fletcher completed the win.

March 2016: Newcastle United 1-1 Sunderland with both clubs battling relegation at St James Park. Defoe struck first for Sunderland, but Aleksandar Mitrovic levelled to share the points.

January 2024: FA Cup third round, Sunderland 0-3 Newcastle United. Dan Ballard’s own goal opened the scoring, Miguel Almiron punished a defensive error to set up Alexander Isak for the second early in the second half, and Isak added a penalty to confirm progress.

December 2025: Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle United in the Premier League. At the Stadium of Light, Magpies record signing Nick Woltemade put through his own net to settle the first top-flight derby in nine years.
