Liverpool ended Sunderland’s unbeaten home record in the Premier League as the Reds claimed a valuable victory in the race for a top-five finish thanks to Virgil van Dijk’s second-half header.

With what was only a second Premier League win in their last eight games, Arne Slot’s side ended the only unbeaten home record remaining in the top-flight as they capitalised on dropped points from fourth-place Manchester United and fifth-placed Chelsea on Tuesday night.

Liverpool, who remain sixth but are now just two points behind Chelsea, suffered another injury blow in defence, however, as stand-in right back Waturu Endo was stretchered off with an ankle injury.

Virgil van Dijk’s second-half header saw Liverpool FC end Sunderland’s unbeaten Premier League run at home with a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

Florian Wirtz came closest to opening the scoring in the first half but his effort hit the post.

Liverpool did break the deadlock in the 61st minute when Van Dijk flicked home a header from Mohamed Salah’s corner.

The Reds then safely saw out the game to move three points away from the top four and end the Black Cats’ unbeaten run of 12 league games at the Stadium of Light.

Liverpool’s defensive injury crisis worsened as Wataru Endo was stretchered off at Sunderland.

Endo was filling in at right back for the suspended Dominik Szoboszlai, who himself had been stepping in for the injured Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong while they were sidelined.

“I don’t think we have that many injuries but you notice it earlier with us because our squad is not as deep as some other’s,” Arne Slot told TNT Sports.

“His injury does not look good. I expect him to be out for a long time again. In the right full-back position we have had a lot of problems, that is obvious.”
