Sunderland are weighing tweaks to Régis Le Bris’ staff, holding talks to add former Middlesbrough and Hartlepool goalkeeper Pete Jameson, 33, to the academy.

According to Sunderland Echo, nothing is final, though talks continue over Jameson working mainly with U18 and U21 keepers at the Academy of Light. Any move could have knock-on effects higher up.

Jonny Maddison could step into a first-team goalkeeper coach role on Le Bris’ staff. He was with the senior group before the recent Manchester United game.

Maddison would work under lead goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler, who joined last summer. Sporting director Florent Ghisolfi wants greater depth across the goalkeeping pathway.

Former goalkeeping lead Alessandro Barcherini remains on Le Bris’ staff as an assistant and first-team coach, now focused more on the defence and individual development plans.

Sunderland-born Jameson emerged from Middlesbrough’s academy, then played for Consett and Sunderland RCA before Darlington in 2013. He made 130-plus Darlington appearances, then featured for Blyth Spartans, York City, Harrogate Town and Hartlepool United.

He spent 2023-24 on loan at Hartlepool from Harrogate, making 21 appearances before release. He returned to Darlington in 2024 and became Gateshead’s player-coach in July 2025.

In the academy, Matty Young is close to a new deal after impressing on loan at Salford City. Ben Metcalf’s one-year option is triggered, Joe Cowan and Isaac Allan are contracted, while Dan Cameron and Adam Richardson are set to move on.

Sunderland are also reviewing their set-up after February’s departure of assistant head coach Luciano Vulcano.
