Sunderland West End confirm Wearside League return after Northern League exit | OneFootball

Sunderland West End will rejoin the Wearside League this season, two months after resigning from the Northern League. The club said in a statement that the men’s first team is returning to senior competition.

It follows a difficult spell for Wearside’s non-league scene, with Ryhope CW, Farringdon Detached and Silksworth CW all resigning in recent times. Discussions with the Wearside League, Durham FA and Silksworth created a swift route back.

West End will compete in the league’s top tier and begin with a home game against Durham FC Corinthians at Ford Hub on Wednesday night.

Thanks were extended to Silksworth CW, the Wearside League and Durham FA for support, alongside sadness at Silksworth’s folding.

Further details on next steps, including the management set-up and playing squad, are due in the coming days.

The return had been planned for the right moment, but it has arrived sooner than anticipated. Growth to over 30 youth teams makes a men’s side a natural and necessary step for players.
