Opta's supercomputer has predicted the Championship relegation battle, including West Bromwich Albion, Leicester City, and Blackburn Rovers' points...

The 2026/27 Championship relegation battle has a distinctly heavyweight feel, with the likes of Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers, and West Bromwich Albion joining Oxford United and Portsmouth in the battle to survive.

It has far more established names in a fight few would have predicted, with just two places remaining in joining Sheffield Wednesday in League One. For Oxford and Portsmouth, survival would represent success. Both clubs are still adjusting to the relentless demands of the second tier after recent promotions.

While relegation would sting, it wouldn’t be catastrophic. The same cannot be said for the others involved. Leicester City, in particular, face a potentially disastrous outcome. Relegated from the Premier League in 2025, back-to-back drops would be financially and psychologically damaging, accelerating a decline that already feels alarming.

The loss of revenue, talent, and status would be severe. Then there’s West Brom and Blackburn Rovers — two clubs with top-flight histories and expectations that far exceed a relegation scrap. For both, falling into League One would represent a major failure of recent recruitment and planning.

Easter weekend is upon us and it could be potentially pivotal. The last seven or eight games of the run-in is where pressure intensifies. Survival isn’t just about pride for these sides — it’s about protecting stature, finances, and long-term direction.

The state of play and the Championship table ahead of two games played in four days this weekend is as seen below. Leicester have been deducted six points and are inside the bottom three.

There are a number of head-to-head clashes between these sides, too. That includes Portsmouth against Oxford on Monday, as well as West Brom against Blackburn and Leicester travelling to Sheffield Wednesday.

Those six-pointers will shape the landscape of the table in a significant way, but Opta have already outlined their predictions before the run-in even starts. We have taken a look at what that looks like after thousands of simulations, here.

Opta are predicting Portsmouth and Oxford to drop, with West Brom given the greatest chance of survival at 15.9%. Blackburn are given a 25.22% chance and Leicester 43.78%. Survival is predicted to require 49 points in total currently.

The positive aspects of relegation from the Championship to League One

Relegation to League One is never the aim but if the clubs involved in the relegation battle want a positive spin on the situation, it can offer a valuable reset. For example, dropping a division often gives clubs the chance to rediscover a winning habit and some momentum — something that can be impossible in a struggling Championship side.

Momentum builds quickly when results improve, and that feel-good factor can reconnect players, staff, and supporters. It can also allow for a cultural reboot. Expectations shift, younger players get opportunities, and recruitment can become more focused and effective.

Clubs like Sunderland and Ipswich Town have shown how a clear identity in League One can galvanise a fanbase and lay foundations for long-term progress. The problem for a club like Leicester, though, is that there are financial realities, of course. Revenues drop significantly, forcing a tightening of budget and smarter decision-making.

But that can encourage sustainability — lower wage bills, better planning, and less reliance on short-term fixes. Ultimately, while relegation is a setback, it can also be the start of something more stable and unified for some of these sides. It can provide the platform to rebuild in a stronger position, rather than to simply survive.
