Wolfsburg face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night and Svenja Huth is keen to see her side pick up another three points.

The German side are flying high in Europe and could go top of the table with a win.

Wolfsburg flying in Europe

Not many teams have started their Champions League campaign better than Wolfsburg this season.

The Frauen-Bundesliga side picked up wins against Valerenga and PSG to kick things off, but it was their 5-2 thrashing over Manchester United that turned heads in the competition.

Wolfsburg returned from the international break with a win but their game against Real Madrid on Tuesday is their biggest of the season so far.

“It wasn’t easy for the team to get back into the normal rhythm again after only one training session together,” said Wolfsburg’s Svenja Huth. “Nevertheless, we returned from the international break with a 3-1 win over Freiburg. Now we face big opponents in Real Madrid. These are precisely the games you live for as a player – we’re looking forward to it.

“I don’t think many people expected us to be in the top four before the season. We’re very happy with where we are and we want to take the next step against Real Madrid in order to get the best result we can at the end.”

Real Madrid have struggled in Europe after back to back wins to kick off their year. The Spanish giants were shocked in a draw against Paris FC before losing to a strong Arsenal side last time out.

Madrid need the win more than Tuesday’s opponents, but both teams look likely to qualify for the knockouts after a strong start.

Are Wolfsburg dark horses for the Champions League?

Wolfsburg have won the Champions League twice in their history but they haven’t lifted the trophy in over ten years now.

A win for the German’s on Tuesday would propel them atop the Champions League group table and would establish them as strong contenders to level things up with Barcelona on three titles.

While they could go top of the table, it may only be for a brief period.

Lyon and Barcelona could both retake the lead in Europe with a win but they don’t play until Wednesday night.

Wolfsburg remain long-shots to win the Champions League this season, but if they beat Madrid this week then not many in Europe will want to play them in the knockouts.
