Bayern Munich took the advantage after the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal against Real Madrid last night and head into next week’s reverse fixture with a one-goal lead.
Luis Diaz opened the scoring for the Bavarians in the 41st minute while Harry Kane doubled that lead immediately after the break. A Kylian Mbappe goal, meanwhile, was Real Madrid’s only saving grace.
Beyond the scoreline, however, both teams had chances, with the Germans having the better ones by some distance.
Aurelien Tchouameni picked up a yellow card on the night and will now miss the second leg through suspension.
Speaking after the game on the incident of his booking, the Frenchman said,
“I was just running, and then I don’t know what happened. The referee has decided that, because there were many fouls, I had to get a yellow card.
“But I really don’t understand it.”
He then spoke about how Bayern Munich’s early goals made it difficult for Real Madrid to believe in a comeback, but that they will head to Munich gunning for a semifinal spot.
“We want to win the game in Munich, but we have to do things better.
“We have done good things, but when we start the game with 0-2, it is more difficult. But we have confidence, we are going to do something next week,” he added.
On what they must do differently in the second leg to take a win on aggregate, Tchouameni said,

“We have to continue and give it all. We don’t know what’s going to happen, but if we play at our level, we can surely do great things there.”
Finally, he opened up about Bayern Munich’s high-pressing and coordinated play and praised the Germans for it.
“We know that we play against a team of the world’s top. In the game, with the minutes passing, we had chances to play a little more.
“We played a good second half. We have to continue like this to win the next game there,” he concluded.
Antonio Rudiger was the next Real Madrid player to face the media, and he rued the two goals conceded early in the game.
“We came out in the second half and conceded a goal right away. For me, the two goals we conceded were gifts. I think we need more in the second leg.”
He then commented on how Mbappe’s goal threw the game wide open, with both teams having big chances.
“Everything opened up with a goal from Mbappe. Both teams had many chances to score more goals, but in the end, it played out like this.”
He then spoke on the opponents’ lethal attack and how any small mistake was punished heavily.
“We talked about these things, about not losing the ball easily. Look at the two goals. At this level, it’s very dangerous.”
Finally, he spoke on how his team needs to shoot more and be brave in front of the goal.
“I think we need to shoot more on target. Today, Bayern’s best player was the goalkeeper, Neuer.”
