Erik ten Hag was reportedly ready to call it quits during the summer amidst uncertainty over his Manchester United future.

Indeed, the Dutchman was said to be considering resigning at Old Trafford before the 2024/2025 campaign got underway, according to the Telegraaf.

At the time, numerous reports had even relayed how Ten Hag was growing increasingly frustrated with each passing week of not knowing where he stood in the eyes of INEOS chiefs, who were simultaneously talking to a handful of candidates to gauge their availability in the event that they parted ways with the 54-year-old.

Thomas Tuchel (England), Mauricio Pochettino (United States) and Thomas Frank (Brentford) were among those being considered by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co. as potential Ten Hag successors, although agreements never materialised with any of the parties.

As such, club executives flew to Ibiza to speak with the ex-Ajax man directly, eventually giving him the assurances he so desperately needed. It was confirmed in early July that not only would he be kept at the helm long-term, but also that he would sign a contract extension to keep him in M16 until 2026.

When United’s dismal Premier League form, which had been papered over by May’s FA Cup triumph, continued from the get-go of the current season, speculation quickly reignited regarding Ten Hag’s tenure and whether he’d see out the entirety of his third campaign.

Then, when Sunday’s loss to West Ham United saw the Reds finish matchweek nine in 14th place, INEOS decided that enough was enough. The side are also winless in their first three Europa League matches, leaving them 21st-placed in the new-look standings.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken the reins on an interim basis in the absence of his compatriot, while Ruben Amorim is tipped to be awarded the job permanently if a deal can be reached with Sporting Lisbon.
