Ten men draw against Altach

Difficult return after international break

We did not resume after the international break quite as planned. On Matchday 10 of the ADMIRAL Bundesliga, we had to be content with a draw at home to SCR Altach after being reduced to ten men for most of the game following a red card for Joane Gadou shortly before the visitors took the lead. Kerim Alajbegovic and Edmund Baidoo then turned it around to put us in front before Altach levelled late on.

Match summary

The visitors started the game boldly, and we had to find our feet first before Alajbegovic got the fans on the edge of their seats with the first big chance (15'). However, our game plan was then thrown into disarray when Joane Gadou picked up two yellow cards in three minutes, the second of which could be considered rather petty.

We therefore continued with a man down, and Douglas Mendes made his debut for our Red Bulls as a substitute. The Brazilian would likely have imagined it going differently, however, because just a few minutes after entering the pitch, he caught his opponent on the legs for a penalty!

Greil took the responsibility and gave Altach the lead (34'), a situation that we had to shake off quickly. But even despite being outnumbered and behind, we didn't give up and instantly looked for a way forward again. In the 41st minute, Stefan Lainer got past two defenders on the right and crossed into the middle, where Karim Onisiwo's header was parried by the Altach goalkeeper, but Alajbegovic's follow-up shot finally gave us the chance to celebrate! However, it was clear it wasn't going to be easy, as just before half-time, Alex Schlager had to stretch to prevent a goal.

After the break, things initially looked much better, as despite the man less, we set the pace, and were quickly rewarded. Altach goalkeeper Stojanovic couldn't decisively clear a Krätzig cross, and Baidoo fired in without hesitation to give us the lead (56')!

It was barely noticeable that Ingolitsch's men had been playing with an extra man for most of the game, and it wasn't until the final quarter of an hour that Altach became more active again – although the referee surprisingly spared one of their players a second yellow card after a tactical foul by Bähre (73').

The visitors pushed hard for an equalizer and would get it from a set piece - striker Diawara rose highest after a corner and headed the ball into the net to make it 2-2 (80'). In the final minutes, things got rather frantic with chances at both ends. For our team, Yorbe Vertessen narrowly missed an open goal after a nice combination move (88'), while Altach came close to winning the game in stoppage time with Diawara's counter-attack.

There would ultimately be no winner this time. We are back in action on Thursday, when we host Ferencvaros in the UEFA Europa League. Kick-off is at 18:45 CEST. Tickets are available online in our ticket shop.

Of course the game started in a way you wouldn't expect, with the sending off. With a man down and the score at 0-1, it took us a while to get going. Then we had the game pretty well under control even with ten men, came out well in the second half and hardly conceded anything when we were down. You have to see the game home after you've taken the lead. We defended too poorly from set pieces and that's when things started to get tough. We dropped two points today as we turned the game around and were the better team even when we were down 10. There were a lot of good things about our attitude and determination, but we simply have to defend more maturely in key situations.

At the end of the first and start of the second half, we went forward bravely and had the game well under control. It's a blow to drop points due to two set pieces. We get going again on Thursday!
