Edin Terzic spent 10 years at Borussia Dortmund, rising from scout to head coach, winning the German Cup as interim and later coming close in the Bundesliga and Champions League. According to El Correo, he is now seen as a good fit for Athletic.

A boyhood fan on the Yellow Wall, he became a go-to figure for CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke. He started scouting in 2010, moved into youth coaching under Hannes Wolff in 2013, then followed Slaven Bilic to Besiktas and West Ham after helping with Euro 2012 analysis.

Terzic returned in 2018 as Lucien Favre’s assistant, then took charge in late 2020 after Favre was dismissed. He completed that season and lifted the German Cup, with Erling Haaland scoring and Jude Bellingham creating in a side featuring Jadon Sancho, Achraf Hakimi and Marco Reus. Despite that success, Marco Rose was hired, lasted one year, and in 2022 Terzic became head coach at 39.

He placed heavy pressure on himself, knew the club inside out, yet had to live with sustained scrutiny. He resigned in 2024 after defeat in the Champions League, with Dortmund’s demands regarded as the highest in Germany after Bayern.

He is seen as likely to adapt well at Athletic, identifying with his club and embracing the challenge of working mainly with homegrown players. His eye for profiles and tactical fit is viewed as a strength, and the club’s restricted market could motivate him further. During two years without coaching he studied extensively, worked with a data analytics start-up and shaped ideas for Bilbao. He chose the move with his heart and now has the chance to show them at a big club.
